What it means to be Baptized?

Baptism is a public profession of your faith in Jesus Christ.  It is about "going public" with your faith, and it's the next step after your salvation.
"We are therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Romans 6:4

What is Baptism?

Bible baptism pictures burial.  The Greek word in the New Testament for baptize is the word "baptize" which means to dip beneath the surface.  It was used in classical Greek of the sinking of a ship. It is easy to see that burial in water beautifully pictures Christ's burial in the tomb.  Also it is easy to see that lifting a person up out of the water is a beautiful picture of Christ's resurrection from the tomb.  Therefore, Bible baptism occurs when a person who has already been born of the Spirit is physically immersed into water and lifted out of water in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. This outwardly portrays the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus which the person has already experienced inwardly.

Reasons Believers should be Baptized:

1) Obedience—Jesus commands us to be baptized (Matthew 28:19-20).  Baptism is the first step of obedience in the life of a new Christian.
2) Jesus was baptized—A follower of Jesus should follow him in baptism.
3) Public Witness—Your baptism is a public witness to the fact that you have been saved.
4) New Testament Pattern—People in the New Testament were baptized after they were saved as an outward sign of the inward reality.

Who is Baptism For?

Baptism is for those who have already made a decision to follow Jesus and have accepted His offer of eternal life and forgiveness of sins.  Baptism is for those, who by choice, have decided to follow the example of Jesus and be submitted to His Lordship in every area of their life.  We are not baptized to be saved but we are baptized because we have been saved.  It is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from our sin and it is through baptism that we demonstrate publicly that we understand our salvation rests on Jesus' death, burial and resurrection.  Because He lives we also are able to live!

What if I was baptized as an infant?

Some churches baptize infants.  At the Household of Faith Christian Fellowship Church we don't.  We only baptize those who have made a decision to believe in Christ's death as a payment for their sin.  In the Bible, men and women were baptized following their belief in Jesus.  Therefore, if you were baptized as a baby, we encourage you to be baptized by immersion as a believer.

Why is Baptism Important?

Baptism is important because it proclaims what Jesus has done in our life.  It is a sign that the old sinful life is buried and that new life—abundant, eternal life, the life Jesus Christ offers in God (John 10:10), is made alive inside you!  When one is brought out of the water baptism, it symbolized this new life with Christ.  When you are baptized, it demonstrates your old sinful nature being buried; it no longer has control over you.  Now you are in Christ. Jesus Christ is your new life; He gave you the Holy Spirit to help you walk in His ways.  You received your new life at the time of your salvation.  Baptism simply demonstrates publicly that inner conversion and desire to live for the Lord.
