The Steering Power of Words

Feb 23, 2026    Bishop Calvin M. Hooper

Reading: Proverbs 18:20-21; James 3:1-5

Devotional: Just as a small rudder directs a massive ship through turbulent waters, your words steer the direction of lives—including your own. Today, consider the sobering reality that "death and life are in the power of the tongue." Every conversation is an opportunity to guide someone toward hope or away from it. Before you speak today, pause and ask: "Where will these words steer this person?" Your tongue may be small, but surrendered to the Holy Spirit, it becomes a powerful instrument of grace. Jesus is Lord not just of your heart, but of your lips. When Christ controls the heart, He directs the tongue. Let your words today be a rudder pointing others toward Jesus.

Reflection Question: Who in your life needs words of direction and encouragement today?
