The Inadequacy of Self-Atonement
Reading: Hebrews 10:1-14
Devotional: In the Old Testament, the people brought sacrifices year after year, yet these offerings could never permanently remove guilt. They were reminders that the debt remained unpaid. The priest would say, "See you next year"—because the blood of bulls and goats couldn't truly take away sins.
Many believers today live under this same cycle. They confess, feel temporarily relieved, then return to guilt when they sin again. They try to atone through good works, religious activity, or self-punishment. But here's the liberating truth: when Jesus cried, "It is finished," He meant it. The sacrifice was complete. Final. Sufficient.
You cannot add to what Christ has already accomplished. Your guilt doesn't require more penance—it requires faith in a finished work. Stop trying to earn what has already been freely given. Jesus didn't cover your guilt; He removed it completely.
Reflection: Are you trying to pay for sins Jesus already died for? What would change if you truly believed His work was complete?
