The Origin of Guilt

Feb 2, 2026    Bishop Calvin M. Hooper

Reading: Genesis 3:8-13; Romans 3:23

Devotional: Guilt entered humanity in a garden, and its echo still resounds in our hearts today. When Adam and Eve sinned, they immediately felt exposed and ashamed. Notice that God didn't abandon them—He came looking for them, asking, "Where are you?" This wasn't a question of location but of relationship. God already knew where they were hiding; He wanted them to acknowledge where they stood spiritually.

Today, guilt still serves as an internal alarm, signaling that something needs to be addressed in our relationship with God. But here's the beautiful truth: guilt was never meant to be your prison—only a pointer to grace.

When you feel convicted, don't run and hide like Adam and Eve. Instead, run toward God. He's not coming to condemn you but to restore you. Your guilt is calling you home.

Reflection: What are you hiding from God today? He already knows—He's simply waiting for you to come out of hiding.
